Bittman-EverythingSalad Niçoise - april 23, 2014

A composed salad is the obvious thing to make when the fridge is full of Easter Eggs. Salad Niçoise is one version that I especially love, there is something magical about the combination of vinaigrette, hard boiled egg and canned tuna. They work phenomenally well together.

Buy the bookSteamed Artichokes and Cauliflower Pasta - april 15, 2014

The very first artichoke is ready to harvest from a plant in my garden. It is the only survivor of an entire packet of seeds that I started three years ago, so a celebration is in order! My daughter has asked to eat the little darling steamed with butter sauce.

Risotto Croquettes - april 13, 2014

My friend Dawn is having us over for a BBQ. We'll be crashing the party that she and my other friend Emma sold as part of the fund-raising auction at our elementary school, but that still counts. I'm so excited, a BBQ!

Take Out Chinese - april 12, 2014

My choices are to either make the soup with the cauliflower I bought last Sunday, or to work on the gigantic project I've been meaning to get to now more than ever. But not both. I choose the project. My kids are always happy when we order takeout chinese food. Dumplings, fried rice, won-ton soup, string beans and chicken. The menu never changes.

Shrimp Risotto & Shaved Salad - april 11, 2014

There is a recipe for shaved fennel and radish salad in this week's Eatwell Farm newsletter and both ingredients in the box, along with green garlic. Chicken broth, arborio rice and green garlic seem like natural companions to me, so I'll add some shrimp and we'll have risotto with a little sauteed kale and this salad on the side.

Lamb Kofta - april 10, 2014

I discovered Waitrose Kitchen magazine while in London with my family last week. I know, everyone always complains about British food, but recently they seem able to take that love of gardening they're also known for and cook up some pretty delicious meals from what's popped up in the backyard. Or allotment.

Swiss Chard and Lentil Soup - april 9, 2014

While visiting my French friend Laure in London, who is author of the Frog Mom blog, I was reminded of this book because she has it on her shelf, too. In fact, she is the one who first showed it to me many years ago in San Francisco. Packed with nearly 200 recipes for soup, I can always find something quick and tasty to make for dinner here. It is especially perfect for days when I've been swimming in the icy cold river at Hyde Park with Laure and need to warm up fast.

Brussels Sprouts & Lemon Meatballs - april 8, 2014

The most perfect little brussels sprouts were at our local farmers' market this past Sunday. Of course I couldn't resist them, along with the chard, kale, other kale, strawberries, honey, two types of almonds, cookies, bread loaf and mixed purple sprouts that ended up in my bag. Now we have to eat it all before the CSA box arrives on Thursday.

Pasta Bolognese & Arugula Salad - april 6, 2014

Pasta with Bolognese sauce for dinner is nothing out of the ordinary for my family. But I don't make it every time we eat it, that just takes too long. Leftover sauce from the freezer works just fine for us. This recipe is unusual because it uses white wine, milk and chicken livers. I've never purchased chicken livers before, at least not without most of the rest of the bird attached. And I still haven't, because I sent my husband to do it while I prepped everything else.

Alexander-KitchenLamb Kebabs & Tzatziki - april 5, 2014

We're back from a week in the UK and I am returning to some old British favorites. Stephanie Alexander is actually Australian, but this book follows the seasons of England and appears to be published there as well, which is a good enough connection for me.
