Summer Fruit
august 22, 2014
Summer in San Francisco doesn't come until very late August, at the earliest, when we're guaranteed to have the best fruit on earth filling our kitchen. And from now through the end of October it will be warm. Hot, even, if we get lucky.
This is the best time of year for produce. But it is also the best time of year for fruit flies. And since I absolutely refuse to put ripe fruit in the fridge, things can get a little buggy around here.
This year I've found the best solution so far, which is to fill a small bowl with 1/2 a cup or so of wine (or vinegar, whichever I have to spare) and mix in 1 Tablespoon of sugar. Then, cover the bowl with a piece of plastic wrap and poke some holes in it. Big enough for a fly to get through but not too big.
Set the little bowl amidst the fruit and they go in, but they don't come out. Hooray! Thanks to my Twitter friends @HerbEnthusiast for this idea and @mrsluna for recommending I hide the compost.
